BoingBoing points us to this engaging D.I.Y. vid of someone making a Star Trek phaser out of a toy and the Blu-Ray diode from a Playstation. As BB points out, a discussion of the power of the Blu-Ray laser seems to insinuate that it can cause quite a bit more damage then the creator thought. A commenter claims that it can fry a retina in less time than it takes to blink. Dammit Jim, the future is now!
