Well the writers who are not working have to do something. Why not produce a few vids to play in the very medium that you are fighting for revenue from? Here they do a spoof where all the cute animals from those darling youtube videos are on-strike and not being cute in support of the writers. Fun idea, if only we could develop a show around that...
Unfortunately for some of us. The carnival sideshow is a disappearing phenomenon. Yes there are a few traveling shows, yes you can do the Coney Island's of the world and see a freak here and there, occasionally, some themed nightclub event brings out a sword swallower, but in general, they are a rare find. Enter user generated video. It turns out that there are hundreds of clips of people doing all sorts of bizarre acts to get attention. I would also bet that many of these have exposed their art to more people than most carny acts would get in a lifetime. There is one gentleman who has called for the creation of a YouTube Freakshow. So maybe it will not die out, but instead, will live a digital life for years to come.
The line between CGM and PGOM (professionally generated online media, yes, my term) is getting blurred. More people are creating content specifically for the web, and often in the D.I.Y. style that is popular among CGM. For example, check out VideoJug. They create how-to videos on a variety of topics from saving water and money with every flush of your toilet to looking better naked and many in between. When I first saw the guide to making BeatBoxing puppets, it seemed to be a spoof, a well done spoof, but a spoof nonetheless. But in context of all the other videos that they put up, you can tell they are looking at themselves as a content company and one with a distinct style and voice. At that point, is it not CGM anymore but goes to the realm of PGOM? If a director makes videos for his friends without being paid for, but using the tools at his disposal, which category does that fall? These are the questions emerging, some of which are why this medium is so charged and interesting. Regardless, here are some very white people doing beatbox with sox.
The Miss Teen South Carolina deluge is beginning. Nothing like a nervous, not-so-smart, teen beauty queen's flub on national teevee to get the internets all in an a boil. Thanks to the gay cowboy for the first one!
Rihanna's Umbrella is the #1 song in the country right now. To celebrate, here is an annoying guy with an accent doing an illusion with a red umbrella.
